Chantier d'accès à la terre - Bedford Township farming site
MRC Brome-Missisquoi is offering up-and-coming farmers access to 31 hectares of farmland—12 hectares of cultivated land and 18 hectares of forest. This parcel of land is located in Bedford Township and was offered to the MRC to help new farmers in the area get their foot in the door.
The objective of the project is to set up new farmers on small plots under agreements that guarantee their access to land and shared services.
Several projects could be launched at the same time, grouped under a legal structure that allows for resource sharing. Uniting multiple farmers on a single site will create synergy, a real boon to their businesses. Some equipment—like greenhouses and tunnels, a space for sharing and packaging, and machinery and tools—can be shared, which will reduce purchasing costs,
While it’s not possible to offer housing directly on the farm, Bedford Town and Township are offering interesting opportunities that will in turn energize the local community. This promising project will generate growth in the area, another step toward stimulating the region and its local communities.
Project phases
For several years now, real estate has been putting more and more pressure on farmlands in MRC Brome-Missisquoi as more and more vacation and non-farming homes pop up in rural Brome-Missisquoi. This obviously impacts the value of farmlands in the region, a trend that the pandemic only exacerbated.
Besides rising real estate prices, the MRC’s aging population is less and less involved in the farming community, making it difficult for new farmers to access land. This holds particularly true in an area like Bedford, where high start-up costs make starting your own farm business a daunting task.
