Hockey: the national sport
Sports in Quebec, like in all places, are enjoyed not just for recreation and competition, but also for entertainment. Obviously, some sports are more popular than others.
Hockey is one of the most popular sports in Quebec. Quebec’s team in the National Hockey League, or NHL (the professional Canadian and American league), is the Montréal Canadiens. You can see them play at the Bell Centre in downtown Montréal.
The Bell Centre has a capacity of 21,273 seats, making it the largest hockey arena in North America. It covers 3.87 acres and is one of the most advanced and versatile entertainment facilities in the world.
People in Quebec also enjoy soccer (called football in other countries) and American football. CF Montréal, formerly known as the Montreal Impact, is a Montréal-based soccer club that plays in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Quebec also has a professional American football team, the Montreal Alouettes, that plays in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
