Driving under the influence of alcohol

It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 80 mg or higher of alcohol per 100 ml of blood (0.08). The police can arrest you and suspend your licence if your BAC is over 0.08.

You can also be arrested for refusing to obey a police officer’s orders, such as taking a breath test. It is illegal to drive and drink alcohol at the same time. This rule also applies to passengers.

Driving under the influence of drugs

It is dangerous to drive under the influence of drugs, including cannabis. The police can determine if you are under the influence of drugs, and if you are, charge you with driving while impaired.

Zero-alcohol limit

People under 22 or with learner’s or probationary licences cannot drink and drive, even if their BAC is below 0.08. These drivers have a zero-alcohol limit.
